Secrets and Lies – Short story Competition Anthology 2023 by Cambridge Writers

Secrets and Lies – A great gift idea for Christmas!

This year’s anthology makes a perfect stocking filler for the avid reader in your life. Packed with a wide variety of unique short stories, all sharing the competition theme ‘Secrets and Lies’. Our writers brought their individual interpretations to this theme, resulting in imaginative, amusing and poignant tales that will leave you thinking ‘oh I’ll just read one more!”

A word from our judge, Dr. Sean Baker, Associate lecturer, Anglia Ruskin University.

“I had no idea what to expect when I was asked to judge this year’s competition, but I have to say I enjoyed every single story and I’ve no doubt that any of my personal top six could have been chosen as the winner by another judge, and I wouldn’t have quibbled (much!). All story competitions in the end are one person’s (or sometimes a small number of people’s) opinion.

There was a huge variety in themes and styles, covering historic (from Ancient Greece to WW2) to several set in the future, which added to me enjoyment of the reading and judging process. The winning six stories shared a number of structural features; small number of characters, tight timeframe and a good sense of place but, most of all, they had layers which rewarded a second and third read.”
