Cambridge Writers hold several writing competitions each year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

They are exclusively for members and there are no entry fees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We offer cash prizes in most of our contests.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Fantasy Fiction Competition<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

We are continuing to run the fantasy writing competition this year, with more cash prizes on offer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To help you in writing your entries, here\u2019s a definition of Fantasy Writing:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

A genre of speculative fiction writing involving magical elements, sometimes inspired by mythology or folklore. It differs from science fiction and horror by the fact that scientific or macabre themes are generally absent, or are not the main focus of the writing.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Fantasy Competition rules:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

1) The competition is open to members of Cambridge Writers, who may submit one entry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2) Word limit 1,000 words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3) Entries must have a title, which is not part of the word limit. They must not bear the author\u2019s name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4) Closing date 31st May. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

5) Entries must be sent via email to the competition secretary, as a Word file attachment. You will receive a notification of your entry. Should you not receive this, please email the secretary. Members will be advised of who the secretary is in an email from the chair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

6) Entries must be accompanied by a separate file with the title, the author\u2019s name and the word count.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

7) All entries will be circulated anonymously to all members who may vote on their first, second and third choices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

8) The closing date for voting is 30th June.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

9) Prizes will be \u00a350, \u00a330 and \u00a320 for first, second and third places. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Short Story Competition<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Our short story competition has a different theme each year, decided at the AGM in the spring. You can interpret the chosen theme in any way you choose, just make sure it’s linked in some<\/em> way. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can submit your entry at any time until the closing date the following January, so there’s plenty of time to work on your story. Entry is free, and is open only to members of Cambridge Writers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The word limit is 2500, not including the title.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We use an external judge, and have had professionals in the fields of publishing, writing or education adjudicate previously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is a fantastic \u00a3100 available to the winner, \u00a370 for second, and \u00a350 for third place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There’s also the added bonus that, subject to your agreement, you will see your entry published in one of our beautiful short story competition anthologies<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Flash Fiction Competition<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Our flash fiction contest runs in September each year. Entry is free, and is open only to members of Cambridge Writers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Entries are brought along on results night and read out by a selected reader in order that authors remain anonymous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All members attending the results evening then vote on their favourite entries. The top three entries win \u00a330, \u00a320, and \u00a310, as well as the glory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The definition of ‘flash fiction’ often varies significantly. We keep the word count pretty tight at 250 (not including the title, thank goodness!). There is no set theme, so you can write your flash piece on any subject, and in any genre you like.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All members can attend the results evening, you don’t have to have entered the competition, and we encourage all members to come – it’s a lot of fun. But if you have entered, you cannot vote for your own entry!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
